Should the next Doctor be a woman?

Thursday, December 4th, 2008 by admin

Should the next regeneration of the Doctor on Doctor Who be a woman? A group of female scientists in the UK insist that he should be, “to increase the awareness of women in science”:

Well, let’s hope the BBC can rise above such partisan political pressure, which I’m sure they can.  But I’ve thought for some time that it would be pretty neat if the Doctor could be a woman, even if for no longer than just, say, the next Christmas special.  Didn’t Joanna Lumley briefly play a version of the Doctor for one of those children’s charities specials?  As a matter of fact, the list of distinguished - or just plain awesome - female British actresses who could play the Doctor is a pretty long one.  Judi Dench - why not?  Joanna Lumley… brilliant.  Helen Mirren…  Come to think of it, the female Doctor could be a younger model, but I’m thinking a more seasoned version would be the most effective.

As far as raising awareness of women in science, perhaps one should ask the Gallifreyans why more women didn’t become full-fledged Time Lords.  (The only female examples I can think of are Ramona and the Rani… which makes the notion kind of a 50/50 proposition…)
