Archie Gets Married… Maybe

Friday, May 22nd, 2009 by admin

Following its “new look” stories and a peek at Archie and the gang’s freshmen year, Archie Comics has announced that it will look into the future with a tale of Archie’s engagement and marriage.

Beginning in August, with Archie #600, writer Michael Uslan and artist Stan Goldberg present “Archie Gets Married.” In Part 1, the red-headed college graduate proposes, but whether it’s to Betty, Veronica, or some other female interest has yet to be revealed. Along the way, readers will also see what the other members of Archie’s large cast are doing several years in the future.

Archie #600 is scheduled to ship to comics shops Aug. 19 and newsstands Sept. 8. The 32-page issue retails for $2.50.

Goodnight Opus

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008 by admin

Berke Breathed is closing out the Opus comic strip; it’s been a rather long-running sequel to the original, brilliant Bloom County, which is still very much missed.

True story: I happened to be watching the CBS Evening News the night that Dan Rather announced Breathed had won a Pulitzer for Bloom County - only Rather misidentified it as Bloom Country. This was intentional, I instantly realized, because of a particular strip in which a character intones, “Dan Rather is a turnip.”

Okay, I’ll be honest: I didn’t know that Opus was still an ongoing comic strip. I don’t take the paper. So, sue me. Still, it seems Breathed is doing fine, and is still writing and illustrating children’s books. Good for him.

Rick Veitch

One of my favorite comic book writers/artists, Rick Veitch, is having some of his classic older material reprinted in shiny new formats. Here’s a brief article on the subject from Douglas Rushkoff at BoingBoing:

Circuit City Vs. Mad Magazine

Thursday, September 4th, 2008 by admin

HA! Sorry if this is old news, but I just now found out about it:

MAD magazine, those fershlugginer festooners of flippancy, did a spot-on parody of a Circuit City plasma TV ad, and in retaliation one of their corporate crybabies demanded that copies of their magazine be removed from all stores that sell them (which only turned out to be about 40 out of hundreds, but still).
